What’s the Difference Between Skilled Nursing Care and Regular Home Care?
While both skilled nursing care and regular home care enable seniors to remain at home, they serve very different needs. Understanding the distinction helps families choose the right services for their loved one’s health and lifestyle.
Skilled Nursing Care
- Delivered by licensed registered nurses (RNs) or licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) under a physician’s direction.
- Includes medical tasks such as wound care, IV therapy, injections, complex medication administration, health monitoring, post-surgical care, catheter or ostomy care, and chronic disease management.
- Requires a physician’s order and is often covered by Medicare or private insurance if medically necessary and the patient is homebound.
Regular Home Care
- Provided by home care aides or caregivers (not nurses), and does not require a doctor’s order.
- Focuses on non-medical support: assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, meal preparation, light housekeeping, companionship, and transportation.
- Generally not covered by Medicare; may be paid out-of-pocket, by long-term care insurance, or through some Medicaid programs.
When to Choose Each Service
- Choose skilled nursing care when your loved one requires medical attention at home, especially after surgery, during recovery, or for chronic illness management.
- Choose regular home care when the main need is for daily living assistance, safety supervision, or companionship.
Combining Services
- Many families use both—skilled nurses for medical tasks and home care aides for daily support—creating a holistic care environment at home.
