Your Medicare Journey: Understanding When Coverage Begins and How to Get Started
Medicare eligibility typically begins at age 65, but knowing exactly when to enroll and how to navigate the process can save you from penalties and coverage gaps.
When Medicare Coverage Starts
- Age 65: Most people become eligible the first day of their birth month (or the 1st of the previous month if born on the 1st).
- Under 65 with Disabilities: After receiving Social Security Disability benefits for 24 months.
- Any Age with ESRD or ALS: Special enrollment rules apply for End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS diagnosis.
How to Enroll in Medicare
- Automatic Enrollment: If you’re already receiving Social Security at 65, you’ll be enrolled automatically in Parts A and B.
- Manual Enrollment: Apply online at SSA.gov, call 1-800-772-1213, or visit your local Social Security office.
- Initial Enrollment Period: 7-month window starting 3 months before your 65th birthday month.
Avoiding Late Enrollment Penalties
- Part B penalty: 10% premium increase for each year delayed (unless covered by employer insurance)
- Part D penalty: 1% of national base premium per month delayed
Expert Tip:
- Mark your calendar 3 months before turning 65—this is the ideal time to start the enrollment process for seamless coverage.
