What Is the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?

The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is a preventive benefit that helps seniors stay healthy through personalized prevention planning. Understanding this benefit helps Medicare beneficiaries take full advantage of this no-cost opportunity to focus on health maintenance.

What the Annual Wellness Visit Is

The Annual Wellness Visit is a yearly appointment focused on prevention and health planning rather than treating specific illnesses. It is covered by Medicare Part B with no deductible or copayment when provided by participating providers. This makes it a valuable no-cost preventive benefit.

The AWV is not a physical examination in the traditional sense. It focuses on developing and updating a personalized prevention plan based on your individual health status, risk factors, and goals. It is a planning and prevention-focused encounter.

What Happens During the Visit

Health risk assessment involves reviewing your medical and family history, current medications, and health behaviors. This assessment identifies your personal risk factors and prevention priorities.

Cognitive assessment screens for signs of cognitive impairment. Early detection of cognitive changes enables timely intervention and planning. This brief assessment is not a comprehensive dementia evaluation but identifies those needing further testing.

Functional ability assessment evaluates your ability to perform daily activities safely. This may include assessment of fall risk, hearing, and vision. Problems identified prompt appropriate referrals.

Depression screening identifies symptoms that might benefit from treatment. Depression is common in seniors and often goes unrecognized. Screening enables treatment that improves quality of life.

Review of preventive services determines which screenings, vaccinations, and other preventive measures are appropriate for you based on age, gender, and risk factors. A personalized schedule of recommended preventive services is created.

Personalized Prevention Plan

The central product of the AWV is a written prevention plan. This plan lists your health risk factors, recommended screenings and their schedules, needed vaccinations, and referrals for additional preventive services. It provides a roadmap for your preventive care.

The plan is updated at each subsequent AWV. As your health status changes and you complete recommended screenings, the plan evolves. Keeping up with AWVs maintains current prevention planning.

First Visit vs Subsequent Visits

The initial Medicare preventive visit, called Welcome to Medicare, is available within the first 12 months of Part B enrollment. It includes a physical examination along with prevention planning.

Annual Wellness Visits are available each year after the initial visit. They focus on updating your prevention plan rather than providing physical examinations. The AWV is not intended to address acute or chronic illness management.

Getting the Most from Your AWV

Prepare by bringing a list of all medications including over-the-counter products and supplements. Bring records of screenings and vaccinations received elsewhere. Think about health concerns and goals you want to discuss.

Understand that the AWV does not replace regular checkups for managing chronic conditions or addressing new symptoms. If you have concerns beyond prevention planning, schedule a separate appointment.
